Why Vein Problems Are More Common Than You Think

Why Vein Problems Are More Common Than You Think Arteries and veins may look similar, but they serve very different purposes. Arteries carry oxygen-rich blood away from the heart under high pressure. Veins return blood to the heart under much lower pressure. This difference is why veins are more vulnerable to problems – and why vein disorders affect so many people.

Because veins work against gravity, especially in the legs, they rely on one-way valves to keep blood moving upward. When those valves weaken or fail, blood begins to pool inside the vein. Over time, this pressure stretches the vein walls and results in visible and often uncomfortable vein conditions.

In this brief article brought to you by the Harley Institute, we shed light on the pervasiveness and gravity of vein problems. If you’ve got bulging and twisted veins that seem to get more noticeable every year, then consider our vein therapy solutions for relief.

Understanding Your Veins: A Quick Lesson

Your body contains two main types of blood vessels: arteries and veins. While they're similar, they're definitely not the same. Arteries carry oxygen-rich blood away from your heart to the rest of your body. They're like highways moving traffic out of the city. Veins, on the other hand, push blood back to your heart. They're the return routes bringing everything home.

Here's the difference to note: veins are subject to lower blood pressure than arteries, so their walls don't need to be as thick. The downside? This makes veins more fragile. They're especially vulnerable when they become enlarged due to a vein disorder like varicose veins.

The Shocking Statistics

Ready for some eye-opening numbers? Approximately 23% of US adults have varicose veins. That's nearly one in four Americans walking around with this condition right now. In fact, up to 85% of women and 80% of men will experience some form of vein problem in their lifetime.

The numbers get even more concerning when you look at age groups. Among those aged 50 and above, around 50% of women and 40% of men are affected by varicose veins… and the likelihood of developing varicose veins increases with each decade of life, with a significant spike seen in individuals over the age of 70.

Why Vein Problems Develop

Your veins contain tiny one-way valves that keep blood flowing in the right direction—back toward your heart. When you're young and healthy, these valves work perfectly. But over time, several things can go wrong.

When those tiny valves stop working properly, blood flows backward and pools in your veins. This pooling creates pressure that stretches the vein walls. With time, they’ll bulge and twist into those rope-like varicose veins you can see and feel.

Several factors make this more likely to happen. Age weakens vein walls and valves. Standing or sitting for long periods puts extra pressure on leg veins. Pregnancy increases blood volume and hormone levels that relax vein walls. Family history plays a huge role, too.

Modern Vein Therapy Solutions

The good news is that vein therapy has advanced dramatically in recent years. Gone are the days when treating varicose veins meant major surgery with long painful recovery periods. Today's treatments are minimally invasive, highly effective, and get you back to normal activities quickly.

More importantly, early intervention prevents those serious complications we mentioned earlier. When you treat vein problems before they progress, you avoid the pain, swelling, skin changes, and ulcers that can develop with advanced venous disease.

Consult Our Team Today

Please note that individual experiences with vein problems vary significantly. While vein therapy can deliver vitality, it is not anti-aging per se. Treatment outcomes vary based on individual health status, severity of condition, and other factors.
