The Role of Estrogen

Estrogen is a vital hormone that's responsible for many different activities within the human body. It plays an important role in burning body fat, increasing uterine growth, reducing resorption of bone, increasing healthy HDL cholesterol, supporting the production of collagen for beautiful skin, synthesizing and producing proteins and improving lung function. Estrogen is also a major factor in women's mental health, as a significant enough reduction in available estrogen can result in depression. In addition, a prolonged reduction in Estrogen levels can also cause dangerous medical conditions like atherosclerosis and other forms of heart disease. Men also require a certain amount of estrogen for quality formation and maturation of sperm, for lasting bone health and for controlling and regulating cholesterol.

The Importance of Progesterone

Progesterone is also an important hormone that often decreases as we age. This powerhouse hormone is responsible for healthy conception and pregnancy, regulating the menstrual cycle and maintaining sexual desire. Progesterone is needed for proper egg development and ovulation and helps the uterus prepare for implantation. When the egg remains unfertilized, it is the reduction in progesterone levels that triggers the breakdown of the endometrium and kicks off the menstruation process. During pregnancy, progesterone remains at elevated levels in order to suppress ovulation and to encourage the production of milk. Progesterone deficiency can lead to conditions such as infertility, unpredictable menstrual cycles, mood swings, early menopause, anxiety, depression, low sex drive and hot flashes.
