Learn MoreWhile it has been around for years, growing medical evidence shows that HCG-weight-loss is not the safest or most effective way to lose weight. Understanding what it is – and why experts advise against it – can help you make better and healthier choices.
In this brief article brought to you by the Harley Institute, we share our two cents on why you should think twice before deciding on HCG weight loss.
HCG stands for human chorionic gonadotropin. It’s really a hormone that the body naturally produces during pregnancy. In medical settings, HCG has FDA-approved uses such as treating certain fertility conditions or hormone-related disorders.
In the context of weight loss, HCG diets refer taking HCG supplements administered through injections, drops, sprays, or pellets… while ALSO following an extremely restrictive diet of only 500 to 800 calories per day.
Supporters claim that HCG reduces hunger, targets fat loss, and helps preserve muscle while dieting, but it is not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for weight loss.
Here's what research actually shows: HCG does not cause weight loss, does not redistribute fat, does not reduce hunger, and does not create feelings of wellbeing.
Moreover, multiple studies have compared HCG to placebo treatments, and the results are clear: people lose the same amount of weight whether they're taking actual HCG or a fake substitute.
So, why do people lose weight on this program? The answer is simple and has nothing to do with the hormone: they're eating only 500 to 800 calories per day. To put that in perspective, the average adult needs between 1,600 and 2,400 calories daily.
The FDA has never approved HCG for weight loss and has specifically warned consumers to avoid HCG weight loss products. The agency's position is clear: any weight loss comes from severe calorie restriction, not from the hormone itself.
The health risks of such extreme calorie restriction are significant and well-documented. Living on 500 calories a day can lead to gallstone formation, dangerous electrolyte imbalances, and irregular heartbeat.
Beyond the immediate dangers, extremely low-calorie diets typically backfire in the long run. You might lose weight rapidly at first, but you're also losing muscle mass, weakening your bones, and setting yourself up for rapid weight gain once you return to normal eating.
The truth about sustainable weight loss isn't as flashy or quick as the fads promise, but it's far more effective and infinitely safer. Real lasting weight loss requires a comprehensive approach.
This is where the Harley Institute’s medical weight loss makes all the difference. We address not just what you eat, but also why you eat, how your body processes food, and what underlying factors might be sabotaging your efforts.
Founded by a board-certified physician with a fellowship in functional integrative medicine, our clinic takes a holistic approach. For instance, we begin with a consultation about your health history, current medications, hormone levels, metabolic function, and lifestyle factors.
