Microdermabrasion Aftercare: What to Do (and Not Do) After Your Treatment
20Nov 2025

Microdermabrasion Aftercare: What to Do (and Not Do) After Your Treatment Microdermabrasion is a popular non-invasive treatment that exfoliates the outer layer of dead skin cells, revealing a brighter, smoother, and more refreshed complexion. While the procedure itself is gentle and requires little downtime, the way you care for your skin afterward plays a major role in determining the quality and longevity of your results. Proper aftercare helps your skin heal, reduces irritation, and enhances the benefits of your treatment. Here’s everything you should do and avoid after your microdermabrasion session.

What to Expect Immediately After Treatment

It’s completely normal for your skin to feel slightly sensitive, warm, or tight for several hours following microdermabrasion. Some people notice mild redness similar to a light sunburn, which usually fades within a day. Because your skin barrier has been temporarily compromised, it’s more vulnerable to irritation, dryness, and UV damage. Therefore, aftercare is absolutely essential.

What You Should Do After Microdermabrasion

Keep Your Skin Hydrated

Hydration is key after microdermabrasion or microneedling. A gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer helps replenish moisture and restore your skin barrier. Look for ingredients such as:

  • Hyaluronic acid
  • Ceramides
  • Aloe vera
  • Glycerin

Apply moisturizer several times throughout the day to maintain softness and prevent dryness.

Protect Your Skin from the Sun

Your skin is more sensitive to UV rays after exfoliation, increasing the risk of sunburn and hyperpigmentation. For at least one week:

  • Apply a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher daily
  • Reapply sunscreen every two hours if outdoors
  • Wear a hat or seek shade when possible

Sun protection is one of the most important aftercare steps, especially during the first 48 hours.

Use Gentle Cleansers

Stick with mild, non-abrasive cleansers for the first few days. Cleansing twice a day removes impurities without stripping your skin. Use lukewarm water to prevent further irritation.

Follow Post-Treatment Product Recommendations

Your aesthetician may recommend specific serums that enhance results, such as hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, and peptides. Use only the anti-aging products recommended and avoid experimenting with new skincare items after treatment.

What You Should Not Do After Microdermabrasion

Avoid Touching or Picking at Your Skin

Your skin may feel slightly flaky as old cells continue to shed. Allow this to happen naturally. Picking or rubbing can cause irritation, scarring, or infection.

Skip Harsh or Active Skincare Products

For 48–72 hours, avoid:

  • Retinol or retinoids
  • AHAs and BHAs (glycolic, salicylic, lactic acids)
  • Benzoyl peroxide
  • Exfoliating scrubs
  • Alcohol-based toners

These products can over-exfoliate and damage your skin during the healing phase.

Avoid Heat and Sweat

Heat can irritate your freshly treated skin. For at least 24–48 hours, avoid hot showers, saunas and steam rooms, intense workouts, and hot tubs.

Don’t Apply Heavy Makeup Right Away

Your skin needs time to breathe. Avoid makeup for the first 24 hours, especially heavy foundation or powders. After that, stick with non-comedogenic formulas.

Skip Waxing, Chemical Peels, or Other Exfoliating Treatments

Give your skin at least one week before undergoing any additional exfoliation or resurfacing procedures. Doing too much too soon can damage your skin and delay recovery.

Maximizing the Benefits of Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion works best as part of a consistent skincare routine. Regular treatments, usually every 4 to 6 weeks, can improve skin texture, hyperpigmentation, mild acne scarring, fine lines, and dullness. Following the proper aftercare steps ensures each session builds upon the last and delivers long-lasting improvements.
