The Aging Process and Loss of Skin Elasticity

As we age, our bodies slow it's production of vital supportive fibers such as collagen and elastin. Collagen is what gives our skin strength and firmness, while elastin helps our skill to bounce back to its original shape. As the years progress, it can be difficult to maintain the appropriate levels of elastin and collagen, which eventually causes skin to become loose and wrinkled.

What Accelerates Loss of Elastin and Collagen?

While these structural proteins will naturally become depleted over time, our daily choices and environment can also contribute to a decline of skin condition. Changes in hormones after giving birth and during menopause can contribute to changing skin firmness. So can stress caused by lack of sleep, anxiety and depression. Also, bad habits like excessive drinking, smoking cigarettes and continuous exposure to environmental contaminants can contribute to protein loss. Prevention is always the best medicine. Those who establish great dietary and lifestyle habits and begin a quality skin care regimen early will enjoy higher levels of collagen and elastin production well into their mature years. For those of us who haven't prepared as well, it's important to start eating a clean diet, avoid drugs and alcohol, drink a lot of water and exercise regularly. These actions can help reduce the speed of deterioration. Unfortunately, it can be very difficult to replenish loose, wrinkled skin once it's already set in.

How You Can Improve Elasticity Using Non-Surgical Treatments and Therapies

In the past, the only way to remove the physical signs of aging skin was through cosmetic surgery. Now, thanks to advancements in science and technology, it's possible to significantly reduce fine lines, wrinkles and loose skin without resorting to surgery. Today's techniques like Ultherapy, Laser Genesis, PRP treatments and injectable fillers work to erase blemishes, discoloration, acne scarring and wrinkles while also encouraging new collagen growth. Best of all, these procedures can be performed without the long recovery process, expenses and risks associated with conventional surgery.
